Trebinje from the river

Most of all, I love to explore cities by walking and Trebinje is the perfect city to discover in this way because most of the sights are close, in the city centre and pedestrian zone. If you haven't informed yourself about what you should see before arriving in the city, it's best to first visit the City Tourist Organization, located in the centre, where you will receive all the necessary information from the very friendly staff. Even better, visit it with one of the excellent local guides in a group or private tour. Every monument, place, or sight has its own history, story, or anecdote that the guide knows how to tell so you will remember it easily.

During the summer, you can see Trebinje from the river and enjoy the view from a different, more beautiful perspective. So, go down to the well-maintained dock near the walls of the Old Town or below the terrace of the Humsko restaurant on the shore and sail on one of the fifteen white, wooden boats that are tied there. While sailing on Trebišnjica, enjoy the story of one of the young people who steer the boat. The pleasure can be completed with good wine and snacks, which can be ordered in a package with sailing.

The Trebisnjica river flows through the city with its most beautiful part and is truly a gem that adorns the city with its beauty. It is peaceful and seems to be standing still, so at first glance it is impossible to determine in which direction it is flowing. Its waters are clear and transparent, so through them, we can clearly see the algae, grass, fish, and crayfish that inhabit only exceptionally clean rivers. The Herzegovinian karst in which it springs and through which it sinks is the best filter and the secret of its purity. We observe ducks gliding on the surface of the water, as smooth as a mirror in which the lush greenery of its shores is reflected. A real green oasis!

On the calm and clear waters of the Trebisnjica river, there are also many bridges that connect its shores. With its beauty but also an unusual story about its location change, the Perovic (Arslanagic) bridge stands out, the most famous monument from the Turkish period in Trebinje. It was built in the 16th century but in 1965 it was found underwater in the accumulation lake after the construction of the hydroelectric system on the Trebisnjica river, to be dismantled stone by stone the following year and transported 5 km downstream.

Apart from the bridges, from Trebišnjica you will also have the most beautiful view of the Old Town or Kastel, built on the right bank above Ban Vir, the deepest place on the river where, according to legend, Ban drowned. Apart from the walls surrounding it, you can also see the minarets of the mosques and the clock tower next to the museum building (former barracks).

I won't tell you everything that you can see and experience during the Trebišnjica cruise, but I know that you will surely be delighted, especially if you like to take photos, because you will take the most beautiful photos right from the river, from the boat.

Q&A

1. What are the best places for a cruise on the river Trebišnjica?

The most attractive boat ride on the Trebisnjica River takes place through the city centre. A panoramic tour of the city by water can be accompanied by a local guide or self-guided. It is possible to rent smaller boats for up to three adults, or a larger boat that can accommodate ten passengers. The duration of the ride is tailored to the needs of tourists and can last from 45 minutes to several hours.

A wine tour and a hedonistic boat tour are available. The difference is that on a wine tour, you have only a wine tasting, while the hedonistic tour includes a tasting of prosciutto, cheese, olives, doughnuts, or traditional delicacies from the Trebinje area. The most attractive is the Sunset tour which takes place in the evening and many use it to commemorate a romantic moment like a proposal.

2. Where are the tourist routes connected to the Trebisnjica River and what are the best options to visit?

The Dive Club has trained guides - divers and diving equipment. They offer diving courses, underwater excursions, underwater archaeology and commercial diving. Diving takes place at several attractive locations such as the walls of the Old Town, Trebinje Lake where you can see a sunken bridge and church, Bileća Lake, etc.

It is possible to canoe down the Trebisnjica River. You can choose between two descents of 5 km and 10 km in length. The first and shorter descent is of moderate difficulty and suitable for people with minimal knowledge or no experience, while the second descent is more challenging and will take about 3 hours of moderate-intensity paddling.

There are also 3 kayaking options (half-day and full-day). All of them are less demanding, so they are suitable for beginners. The first route takes you through the city, the second through the beautiful areas of Sušica and Trebisnjica at locations Ušće and Lastva, and the third is the longest and takes you from the Tvrdoš Monastery to the Zavala Monastery.
