Trebinje is located in the southern part of the Republic of Srpska and is considered one of the most beautiful cities in Herzegovina. It is situated beneath the Leotar mountain in the valley of the Trebišnjica River, which flows through the centre of the city. Trebinje is only 23 km away from Dubrovnik, 35 km from Herceg-Novi, and 100 km from Mostar, which is also the nearest airport.
Because of its proximity to the sea, Trebinje has a mild and warm Mediterranean climate. This city is known as the "city of sun and plane trees" because of the 260 sunny days it has during the year and the centuries-old plane trees that you can see in the centre of the city. What to see in Trebinje?
#1. OLD TOWN - To get to know Trebinje better, start from the old town. The old town is built on the right bank of the Trebišnjica River, and the greatest credit for its construction goes to Osman-paša, who began the works in 1714. During his rule, the Sultan-Ahmedova and Osman-pašina mosques were built, as well as the Sahat tower, which can still be seen in the old town today.
#2. HERZEGOVINA MUSEUM - The legacy of the most famous Trebinje man, poet Jovan Dučić, where his rich collection of art, valuable archaeological finds found in this area, as well as a collection of paintings, graphics and sculptures by famous Herzegovinian artists.
#3. ARSLANAGIĆ BRIDGE - one of the most beautiful bridges built during Ottoman rule.
#4. HERZEGOVINA GRAČANICA - located 2.5km from the centre and is one of the most visited religious sites in Herzegovina. Situated on a hill above Trebinje, from which a magnificent view of the city and the Arslanagić bridge can be seen. This site is the legacy of King Milutin and represents a faithful copy of the Gračanica Monastery in Kosovo. Built-in 2000 to fulfil the wish of the poet Jovan Dučić.
HERZEGOVINA WINES: The tradition of wine production in Trebinje began in the 19th century. We recommend trying the authentic wines of this area from the autochthonous grape varieties such as Žilavka and Blatina, but also Vranac, Šardone or Merlo. In the immediate vicinity of Trebinje, there are more than 10 wineries and wine cellars where you can taste top-quality wines directly at their "source."
